EPA Announces New Federal Action Plan for Radon
St. Michael, MN – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says they can save thousands of lives through a new Federal Action Plan on Radon, and Twin Cities Radon Services is ready to help. The plan, in coordination with eight other Federal agencies, is designed to reduce the exposure to radon, particularly among low-income populations. Twin Cities Radon Services is the area’s leader in radon mitigation.
The new Federal Action Plan will encourage radon testing and mitigation of publicly assisted housing, loans and grants to fund radon mitigation in homes of low-income families and efforts to facilitate the deductibility of radon testing and mitigation costs through Health Savings Accounts. The complete plan can be reviewed here.
Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that can seep up through the cracks and holes in the foundation of your home. It comes from the natural decay of uranium in the soil. When radon is trapped inside a house, the levels of radon can grow dangerously high and expose those living in the home to radiation, causing lung cancer or other serious ailments. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says radon kills more than 21,000 people each year.
A radon detection kit can easily determine if your home or business has high levels of radiation. The EPA considers 4 picocuries per liter of air to be a dangerous level. If the radon detection kit finds 4 picocuries or more, a radon mitigation system can be inexpensively installed to vent the gas and eliminate the risk of radiation.
The Deputy Administrator of the U.S. EPA announced the plan yesterday during the Healthy Homes Conference in Denver, CO. Twin Cities Radon Services' Jeremy Huttson is encouraged by the announcement.
"This new federal plan underscores just how dangerous indoor radon exposure can be for families," Huttson said. "This plan will help thousands of people in Minnesota to ensure that their homes are safe."
Twin Cities Radon Services has completed expert level training on radon. Their experts know how to test for elevated radon levels in the home and install an affordable and aesthetically-pleasing mitigation system.
